Damaged Carts

Repair or replacement for normal wear and tear is provided at no cost. Use eAssist or call 972-205-3500.

Cart Odor

Keeping carts clean is a resident’s responsibility. Please see our flyer for tips on keeping your cart clean.

Landfill

Call the Hotline for questions and concerns related to Hinton Landfill operations at 972-205-3671. You may also email the Landfill.

EWS Vehicle

Please call 972-205-3500 with any questions or concerns regarding EWS vehicles. Provide the date and location of the incident and the truck number or license number if possible. Environmental Waste Services investigates all complaints. 

2. I’m new to Garland. How do I start residential garbage or recycling service?

 Please contact Garland Utility Customer Service at 972-205-2671 to establish service. 

One green trash cart and one blue recycling cart are typically left at the home for the new resident by the previous resident. However, if a cart is missing when you move in, contact Environmental Waste Services at 972-205-3500 to arrange for a replacement. 

3. When is my trash, recycling and brush bulky goods collection day?

To quickly find your nearest City Facilities, your City Council District, your trash and recycling collection schedule as well as other City Services, please use MyGarland

Your trash, recycling and brush and bulky goods are picked up on the same day. Trash and brush and bulky goods are collected weekly. Recyclables are collected every other week based on a blue/yellow map of the City.

4. How often is my waste and recycling collected?

Residential Trash

Residential trash is collected in the green roll carts weekly. Please use MyGarland to determine your collection day.

Brush & Bulky Goods

Residential brush & bulky goods are collected weekly on the same day as residential trash collection.

Recycling

Residential recycling is collected in the blue roll carts bi-weekly. Please use MyGarland to determine your collection week color.

Commercial

Commercial accounts are collected once a week:

• Front-Load Containers: Monday through Saturday
• Roll-Off Dumpsters: Monday through Friday

5. How do I start business collection service?

1. Please email EWSCommercial@GarlandTx.gov or call 972-205-3500 for more information about Commercial Services
2. You must sign a 12-month service agreement to establish service.
3. Commercial and residential customers are required to establish a City of Garland utility account. Services will be billed on a monthly basis (one stop billing).
4. If you need to change the container size or collection frequency, we will provide a Service Agreement Addendum that reflects the requested changes within two business days.
5. Collection frequency for both trash and recycling is once per week.
6. There is a flat fee for extra collection between service days for all front-load containers. The fee will be billed on your City of Garland utility account.
7. You may request to have a gravity locking device installed on your dumpster. There is a one-time fee to cover the cost of the locking device.

6. Why wasn't my waste picked-up?

Garland Environmental Waste Services provides weekly trash and brush and bulky goods collection and bi-weekly recycling collection. Please follow the rules outlined below to ensure your waste is collected.

• Carts should be placed at the collection point no later than 7 a.m. on collection day.
• Carts should be at least 4 feet from all other items, including stationary objects such as fences and utilities boxes, and 4 feet apart from other carts.
• Trash and recycling carts’ wheels should face towards home.
• Cart lids should be able to fully close with no items beside or on-top of the carts.
• Do not park in front of any trash or recycling placed at the curb for collection.
• Do not place brush and bulky items underneath electrical wires or tree branches.
• Broken glass, mirrors, windows or Sheetrock should be placed in a labeled disposable container that weighs no more than 40 pounds.
  • Following a rain event, some items, like carpet rolls or brush piles, may weigh more than 40 pounds. Please be advised that our crews will leave those items behind if they weigh too much. Please call 972-205-3500 once the items have dried out to be collected.
• Carts and brush and bulky goods should be placed at the edge of the curb, between the sidewalk and curb, for collection. Environmental Waste Services staff will not go into your yard.
• Brush and bulky goods will not be collected from the alley.

8. When and where can I set out my waste?

Carts

Carts should be placed at the collection point no earlier than 6 p.m. on the day before the scheduled collection and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day. Residents should move the cart inside the garage, to the side of the house or to another location out of public view no later than 11 p.m. on the collection day. If your collection point is in the alley, it is not necessary to move the container after pickup unless your property abuts a street from which the container will be visible.

Brush & Bulky Goods

Brush may be placed out any day within a week of collection.  All other bulky waste items may only be placed at curbside after 6 a.m. on the day before collection. Environmental Waste Services personnel and vehicles will not go into your yard. Please place brush and bulky goods between the sidewalk and curb in your front yard for pick-up. Please box and label items such as broken glass and Sheetrock. Boxes should weigh no more than 40 pounds.

9. How many trash & recycling containers can I have?

Residents can have up to two additional trash containers for a total of three containers. There is a $7.10 charge per month for each additional container to cover service costs.

If you are moving and have more than one trash container, please call 972-205-3500 to have the extra container(s) picked-up and billing records updated.

10. EWS left a note on my container or door. What does it mean?

Environmental Waste Services uses paper tags to communicate collection problems. The tag will explain the issue we experienced servicing your trash, recycling, or brush and bulky goods. Call 972-205-3500 for more information.

11. What can I recycle?

Please use the Waste Wizard for all your recycling and disposal questions.

12. Will Garland Environmental Waste Services pick-up tree trunks and branches?

Garland Environmental Waste Services collects brush and bulky goods every week. 

Please separate brush from other bulky waste and keep branches between 4 - 7 feet in length. Leaves and other small lawn and tree debris should be bagged.

Do not place brush or other bulky goods under power lines or tree branches. Leave at least 4 feet of space around all brush and bulky goods.

EWS personnel and vehicles will not go into your yard. All brush should be placed between the sidewalk and curb in your front yard for pick-up.

Individual items weighing more than 40 pounds will not be collected. Please note that wet materials (following a rain event) may become too heavy for collection and will be left behind to dry out.

13. Will you collect my fencing?

Yes. Please follow the guidelines below:

• Fencing sections should be manageable lengths for our drivers to load into collection vehicles.
• Individual sections must not weigh more than 40 pounds.
• It is not necessary to remove hinges and nails.
• Please remove concrete from fence posts before placing on the curb.

14. I have extra bags of trash that won’t fit into my trash cart. Can I set them out for bulky collection?

No. We will not pick up bags of household trash with the bulky waste. Drop off the extra bags of trash at the Transfer Station or Landfill.

You can also request up to 2 additional trash cart for a nominal monthly fee.

15. Will you collect my construction/tear-out materials?

Construction debris pickup is for residents who have performed remodeling work on their own property only and can be set out for collection only four times per year during each calendar year. Material must be bagged, bundled, or stacked. Contractors are responsible for te disposal of the construction debris from their projects. An open-top dumpster may be rented for a fee for large projects.

Please note we do not pick up shingles with curbside bulky waste collection. Shingles should be taken to the C.M. Hinton Landfill. Contact us at 972-205-3500 if you need to rent a dumpster.

We recommend you order a roll-off container for collection and disposal of waste from:

• Clean-ups
• Construction
• Demolition
• Home improvement projects
• Move-outs
• Roofing

These containers prevent scattered or windblown debris and reduce scavenging, and they are excellent for materials that are prohibited from curbside collection, including:

• Asphalt
• Bricks
• Concrete
• Dirt
• Rocks
• Roofing materials

16. How much does it cost to dispose at your facilities?

17. My apartment doesn't offer recycling, what do I do?

Apartment dwellers can bring their recycling directly to the Residential Recycling Center at no charge.

18. What can I dispose of where?

19. Where can I dispose of hazardous waste and tires?

Hazardous waste materials and tires cannot be disposed on in your regular trash collection or dropped off at the Transfer Station or C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill.

20. How does recycling work?

Recycling is the process of diverting materials from the landfill and turning them into new products. The economic impact of the Texas recycling industry exceeds $3.3 billion. Recycled materials help conserve natural resources and prevent pollution by reducing the need to collect new natural resources. 

By helping keep your recycling clean and contaminant free, you’re helping extend the life of our landfill, conserve valuable resources, and to create jobs in the U.S. recycling and manufacturing industries.

Remember

• Recycle your empty, clean and dry bottles, jars, cans, boxes, cartons and papers only.
• Place recyclables in the cart loose - plastic bags are not accepted in the program and should be taken back to designated collection bins at grocery and retail stores.
• All recycling should be clean, dry and empty.
• Do not place plastic bags, food, liquids, diapers, hoses, wires, batteries and to-go containers in the recycle cart.
• When in doubt, throw it out. It is better to throw away potentially recyclable items than it is to throw garbage into the recycling.
